Hi there, I’ve got both the ‘bulk’ and ‘absorption’ LEDs blinking on my MultiPlus-II 230V. According to the manual, it says it’s in “Equalize” mode. Can someone explain what’s happening during this mode?

The blinking of both ‘bulk’ and ‘absorption’ LEDs in your MultiPlus-II 230V during equalize mode is an important indicator.

Here’s what you need to know:

    • Equalize Charging: This is a specific charging mode designed to balance and equalize the cells within a battery, particularly in lead-acid types.

    • Process and Purpose: During equalization, a higher than normal charging voltage is applied. This helps to mix the electrolyte in flooded batteries, resolve sulfate buildup, and balance the voltage across all cells. It’s like a “reset” to ensure all cells are equally charged.

    • Blinking LEDs Indication: The simultaneous blinking of ‘bulk’ and ‘absorption’ LEDs signifies that this special, periodic charge is being applied.

    • When to Use: Equalization should be performed periodically, as recommended by the battery manufacturer, and typically isn’t needed for sealed or gel-type batteries.

    • Caution: Since equalizing involves higher voltages, it’s important to ensure that any connected devices are capable of handling these conditions, or better yet, disconnect them during this process.

    • Monitoring: Keep an eye on the battery during equalization for any signs of overheating or overcharging.

In essence, the “Equalize” charging mode is an important maintenance step for your batteries, ensuring long-term health and efficiency. Just be sure to follow the guidelines for your specific battery type and take necessary precautions.
