  • What does the ‘Charge Efficiency’ setting do in VictronConnect using Multiplus

In the ‘General’ settings of the VictronConnect app (after connecting my Multiplus-II to my computer, using the MK3 USB interface device) there’s a ‘Charge efficiency’ option for my inverter/charger system. How does this setting work and how can it improve the accuracy of the state of charge reading?

The ‘Charge efficiency’ setting in the VictronConnect app is an adjustment factor that accounts for energy losses during the battery charging process, improving the precision of the state of charge (SoC) calculations.

    Purpose:

    • No battery charging process is 100% efficient. Some energy is inevitably lost due to heat, chemical reactions within the battery, and other inefficiencies in the electrical system.

    • The ‘Charge efficiency’ setting allows you to input an efficiency factor that reflects these losses.

    Function:

    • When you set the charge efficiency, you’re essentially telling the battery monitor what percentage of the input power actually results in stored energy.

    • For instance, if you set the efficiency to 0.90 (or 90%), you’re indicating that 10% of the input energy is lost during charging.

    Adjustment:

    • If you notice that the SoC indication drifts away from reality over time, particularly after several charge and discharge cycles, tweaking the charge efficiency setting can help.

    • This drift can happen due to changes in battery condition, temperature variations, or alterations in system configuration.

    Usage:

    • To determine the right efficiency setting, you may need to observe the battery’s performance over time or consult the battery manufacturer’s specifications.

    • Making small adjustments to this setting and observing the effects on SoC accuracy can help you zero in on the most accurate value.

By accurately setting the charge efficiency, you can ensure that the SoC readings are as true to the battery’s actual state as possible, which is critical for effective energy management and maintaining battery health over time.
