I’m looking at the ‘DC input low-shutdown’ option under the ‘Inverter’ settings in the VictronConnect app, after connecting my Multiplus-II to my computer, using the MK3 USB interface device. Can you explain what this setting is for and how it helps in ensuring battery longevity?

The ‘DC input low-shutdown’ setting in the VictronConnect app is a parameter that determines the voltage level at which your MultiPlus inverter will automatically shut off to prevent excessive battery discharge.

    Function:

    • This setting acts as a safeguard for your battery bank. It defines the threshold voltage at which the inverter will stop drawing power from the batteries to avoid damaging them.

    • Deep discharging a battery can significantly shorten its lifespan and affect its performance.

    Setting the Value:

    • The appropriate ‘DC input low-shutdown’ voltage will vary based on the type of batteries you have installed. It is essential to set this value according to the specifications provided by your battery manufacturer.

    • For example, if you’re using a lead-acid battery, manufacturers typically recommend not discharging below 50% capacity, which corresponds to a specific voltage that you would set as your ‘DC input low-shutdown’ value.

    Battery Life Consideration:

    • By configuring this setting correctly, you ensure that the inverter does not deplete the battery past a safe point, which helps in maintaining the battery’s health and longevity.

    • Consistently discharging batteries below their recommended low-voltage point can lead to sulfation in lead-acid batteries or capacity loss in lithium-ion batteries.

    Usage Tips:

    • It’s also a good practice to periodically check and adjust this setting as your batteries age, as their capacity and voltage characteristics can change over time.

    • Keeping this setting in alignment with your battery’s current state will contribute to the overall energy system’s reliability and efficiency.
